You're used to solving problems, so when she gets emotional, that same instinct kicks in. But she's not your business. Not every uncomfortable emotion is yours to fix. Sometimes she's testing whether you actually stand behind what you said. The moment you change your position to get her back to a good mood, you teach her your word is negotiable, and respect starts leaking out.

You believe enough effort gets results, so you assume the relationship just needs the right fix. Ask yourself straight: put the last few years aside, would you choose this relationship exactly as it is today? If you can't answer that, you're not judging the relationship anymore. You're protecting the investment.

When she pulls away, your instinct is to try harder. But that just shows her that her distance controls you. The harder you chase, the more obvious it becomes you need her more than she needs you. Once she feels that, you're not standing above the relationship anymore. You're underneath it, waiting to be chosen.

Admitting the relationship failed feels like admitting you failed. So your brain dresses up the excuse as "relationships take work" to avoid a decision you don't want to make.
